1. What is delegated steel design?

Delegated steel design is the process of transferring specific engineering responsibilities, such as connection design, from the structural engineer of record (EOR) to a specialized firm like Southern Steel Engineers. This approach allows the primary design team to focus on the overall structural system while SSE ensures the delegated components are safe, efficient, and optimized for fabrication and erection. For example, we provide design for all types of steel connections, including bracing, moment, and truss connections, while ensuring all delegated elements align with project requirements and applicablecodes.

2. What is a shop drawing review?

A shop drawing review ensures that fabrication drawings and erection plans align with the engineer’s intent, design, and project specifications. Southern Steel Engineers meticulously reviews these drawings to identify and resolve discrepancies before fabrication begins. It ensures coordination and alignment with the overall project requirements.

3. When is a shop drawing review required?

Shop drawing reviews can either be prescribed via the contract drawings or specifications or voluntary by the steel fabricator. Shop drawing reviews may be elected by the steel fabricator to add quality assurance and ensure alignment between the shop drawings and the engineer’s design.

4. Do you customize your designs to fit the needs of different fabrication shops?

Yes, Southern Steel Engineers provides customized engineering solutions tailored to the capabilities and preferences of individual steel fabrication shops, optimizing efficiency and ensuring seamless production. We have experience working with a variety of fabrication shops with differing preferences and processes.

5. Do you collaborate with fabricators and erectors?

Yes, we coordinate with fabricators and erectors. We want to make sure that we design efficient connections for the shop and easily constructible connections for the erector in the field. Collaboration early in the process is critical to ensure all parties are on the same page.

6. How do you provide steel connection design for the detailer?

We provide detailed and thorough connection sketches for the steel detailer as well as supplemental connection maps. Our deliverables and processes are set up to ensure we accurately communicate our design to the detailer while making it easier for them to use.

7. What is steel connection design? And when is it required?

Steel connection design involves engineering the joints that connect structural steel members, such as beams, columns, and braces. These designs are required to ensure that load transfers between members are safe, efficient, and code-compliant. Southern Steel Engineers’s steel connection design services are essential for fabricators and erectors working on complex steel structures or projects requiring delegated engineering.

It is required on most projects, that do not include full connection design within the contract drawings provided by the EOR. Delegated connection design is very common on the East Coast and the middle of the country but is less common on the West Coast.

8. What engineering services do you provide for miscellaneous steel design?

Southern Steel Engineers (SSE) offers comprehensive engineering services for miscellaneous steel components, including stair systems, railings, ladders, platforms, stair towers, catwalks, canopies, and other free-standing structures. Our team is experienced in the intricacies of miscellaneous steel design and the variety of material types and methods that fabricators may prefer for their shop. We understand the importance of considering erection of these items and ensuring they integrate with the overall structure.

9. Do you offer lump sum pricing, or do you bill on an hourly basis?

Southern Steel Engineers offers lump sum, fixed-fee pricing for our clients. This ensures there are no surprise charges at the end of the project. We provide transparent pricing, scope lists, and schedules to ensure we’re on the same page with our clients' needs.

10. How do you handle project scheduling and deadlines?

Southern Steel Engineers takes a proactive approach to project management. We use advanced scheduling tools and regular progress updates to ensure we meet deadlines.

We prioritize design for early sequences as well as long lead-time items. Our proactive approach starts at the project kickoff, where we identify RFI’s and key coordination issues. From there we work to provide designs as quickly as possible in priority sequences to get the steel detailer moving and then ultimately steel into the shop and then field.

11. Can you provide a detailed scope of work and cost estimate?

Yes, Southern Steel Engineers provides proposals with detailed scopes of work and exclusions explicitly tailored to the project. Our goal is to ensure we have the appropriate scope covered and clearly communicate that through our proposal. Our proposals include lump sum pricing so that our client has a clear understanding of our fees and there are no surprises.

12. Do you have the capacity to handle large-scale projects?

Yes, Southern Steel Engineers has the expertise, resources, and technical capabilities to manage large-scale structural steel projects. Our team is equipped to handle high-volume connection designs, complex delegated design tasks, and extensive shop drawing reviews for projects of any size. Our team has successfully completed design on several projects in excess of 10,000 Tons with the largest being approximately 40,000 Tons.

13. What are your primary clients and services?

At Southern Steel Engineers, our primary clients include steel fabricators, steel detailers, and steel erectors. We specialize in structural steel design, including steel connection design, steel shop drawing review and miscellaneous steel design. We also have the capability to provide structural building design, miscellaneous structure design for things like catwalks and platforms, shop drawing review, erection engineering, and field fix solutions.

14. Is SSE qualified to work on my projects?

Southern Steel Engineers is licensed in 46 states and we have a team of PEs and EITs on staff. Tyler Sease is also a licensed Structural Engineer (SE) and Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)to better tackle challenges on projects.
